“Is my AOV good?” is one of the most common questions merchants ask. The honest answer: it depends on your vertical and price architecture. But benchmarks give you a starting point, and the tactics to improve are universal.
AOV benchmarks by vertical
- Fashion & apparel: $80–120
- Beauty & skincare: $45–75
- Food & beverage: $35–60
- Home & living: $90–150
- Pet supplies: $50–80
- Electronics & accessories: $100–180
Treat these as directional. A store selling $12 accessories will naturally sit below a store selling $200 jackets. The more useful benchmark is your own trailing 90-day AOV — your job is to move it up.
Seven quick wins
- Launch a bundle on your bestseller. One fixed bundle on your highest-traffic product page is the single fastest AOV win.
- Add volume discounts to consumables. If customers buy it monthly, offer a 3-pack.
- Set a free-shipping threshold ~20% above current AOV, and show progress toward it in cart.
- Add a mix & match builder for variety products — customers who build their own baskets spend more.
- Show “complete the set” offers in cart, not just on product pages.
- Label your recommended tier. “Most popular” lifts tier selection meaningfully.
- Revisit your discount depth. If your bundle attach rate is above 25%, you can likely reduce the discount without losing volume.
Compounding matters
A 15% AOV lift doesn't sound dramatic, but apply it across every order for a year and it's often the difference between a break-even store and a profitable one. Unlike acquisition, AOV improvements cost nothing to maintain once they're live.
