Gift with purchase on Shopify: run BOGO without breaking inventory
How to offer buy-X-get-Y-free on Shopify the clean way — real SKUs at checkout, accurate stock, and a $0.00 gift line customers actually notice.

Gift with purchase is one of the highest-converting offers in ecommerce. “Buy the kit, get the stand free” is easier to understand than a vague percentage off, and the free item creates a concrete win. The hard part on Shopify has never been the idea — it’s keeping inventory honest and the order clean.
Why most GWP setups fall apart
The usual workarounds all trade one problem for another. Manual discount codes get forgotten or shared. Cart-drawer widgets inject scripts that fight your theme. Duplicate “kit” products invent stock that doesn’t exist. And when the free gift isn’t a real line item, fulfillment and returns become guesswork.
- Codes rely on customers remembering to apply them — attach rate suffers.
- Theme widgets slow pages and break when you change themes.
- Fake kit SKUs desync inventory the moment a component sells alone.
- Mystery line items confuse packing slips and 3PL workflows.
Treat the offer as a real product
The clean pattern is a bundle product that includes every component — paid and free. Customers add one item to cart. At checkout, Shopify expands it into real SKUs, and the free gift lands at $0.00 on the order. Fulfillment sees the stand. Inventory decrements the stand. Returns know what went out the door.
How to structure a high-converting GWP
- Anchor on a bestseller. The paid item should already convert on its own.
- Pick a gift that feels premium but protects margin — accessories, samples, or a lower-cost companion.
- Name the offer like a product: “Starter Kit + Free Travel Case,” not “Bundle 12.”
- Show the compare-at price of both items so the gift value is obvious.
- Merchandise the bundle on the anchor product page and in your main collection.
Protect stock on the free item
Free gifts move fast. If the gift can also sell alone, use a reserve buffer on the bundle so standalone sales aren’t wiped out overnight. And because availability should always be the minimum of what every component can support, you never oversell a gift you don’t have.
Measure the right outcome
Don’t only celebrate units of the free gift. Track attach rate of the GWP offer, AOV versus your pre-offer baseline, and whether the gift’s cost is paid for by the lift. If attach rate is high but margin collapses, swap the gift — don’t abandon the tactic.
