Use case

Same-SKU multipacks on Shopify

A multipack is N copies of one variant, sold as its own product. Shoppers pick a 2-pack or 6-pack on purpose; checkout expands real units; stock comes from that variant — not a fake multipack inventory pool.

Who this playbook is for

Use this when customers already repurchase or stock up on one SKU — candle refills, consumables, staples, twin-packs of a hero serum — and you want a permanent (or campaign-dated) shelf product at a published pack price. Skip it when the job is a curated multi-product kit, a companion gift-with-purchase, or a short cart quantity break you plan to delete.

This page is the short offer playbook. For pack-vs-cart-break rules, pricing language vs allocation, and cannibalization decision trees, read the deep guide: Shopify same-SKU multipacks without fake stock.

How checkout and inventory should behave

  • One pack product on the storefront — its own URL, price, and collections
  • Customer adds one line; checkout expands N units of the same variant via Shopify Functions
  • Pack availability is derived from that variant’s stock (÷ N), not typed into a second stock pool
  • Discount allocation matches the shelf sentence (fixed pack price, percent-off, or amount-off + spread)
  • Solo PDPs stay available — the multipack is an upsell path, not a replacement for gift/trial buyers

Setup steps in Better Bundles

  1. Install Better Bundles and open Create bundle
  2. Add the same variant with quantity N (or N identical component rows) — not a mix of different SKUs
  3. Choose fixed price or percentage/amount-off so the shelf price matches your creative
  4. Use spread allocation when every unit should show a fair share of savings
  5. Preview allocation, set Active, and publish the draft Shopify product
  6. Link the multipack from the solo PDP with one clear sentence; run a test checkout for 1× and 2× packs
Tip: Start in Create your first bundle. Keep inventory honest with inventory sync docs. App overview: Better Bundles.

Watch-outs

  • Do not invent a “3-Pack” product with its own stock number — oversells the moment solos sell alone
  • Do not run a cart quantity break on the same SKU while the multipack is live — two mechanisms, one commercial idea
  • Do not copy a BOGO “third free” recipe onto a permanent shelf pack finance priced as “3 for $X”
  • Size replenishment for higher units-per-order; multipacks concentrate demand on one variant
  • For apparel/colorways, start with one fixed bestseller cell before building a variant matrix you cannot stock
